It has been reported that trainer Dean Atkinson has been handed a 10-year ban from the sport of standardbred racing. He is the first harness racing licensee that has been penalized in regard to the swabbing scandal, which has been front and centre in the Down Under racing scene

On Tuesday, January 17, Governor Chris Christie signed legislation which will pave the way for legalized sports wagering in New Jersey. In order to make expanded gaming a reality in NJ, the state will have to challenge the federal ban which only allows sports gambling in Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana

According to reports, bills in New Jersey dealing with expanded gaming, simulcasting, and the licensing of off-track wagering locations passed both the Assembly and the state Senate on Monday, January 9. The bills now move on to the office of Governor Chris Christie

“Sports betting, while beneficial to the state, is another Band Aid for racing…” Perretti Farms Marketing Director Bob Marks has been quoted as saying. “Racing must get introspective and examine its product to determine its viability to the general public…Sports betting probably won’t happen for the next few years, given the hurdles involved.”
