Trot Magazine, North America's leading horse racing publication, and the official magazine of Standardbred Canada, is seeking an enthusiastic Graphic Designer to bring fresh ideas and creativity to one of Canada's most respected and forward-moving equine publications. This Intermediate Design position, available immediately, is best suited to a self-starting, energetic individual who seeks a new challenge each month and has impeccable taste in photography, typography, and classic but exciting design.

What will you be doing?

  • Creating clean, fresh, and dynamic editorial layouts for Trot alongside the rest of our design team.
  • Working with clients to create innovative campaigns for magazine ads and outside use.
  • Researching, choosing, and retouching images when necessary.
  • Collaborating on in-house design projects for Standardbred Canada.
  • Web design, including the creation and posting of web banners on www.standardbredcanada.ca.

What do we need you to have?

  • Minimum 1-2 years design experience in a professional environment, and/or extensive freelance experience, preferably working at or with magazines.
  • High proficiency using Mac platforms and the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Ability to work under strict editorial deadlines with some flexibility in your schedule to accommodate longer press days.
  • Strong ability to multi-task -- and a love for having numerous design projects simultaneously on the go!
  • Natural sensitivity to client requests, excellent social skills, and a desire to seek out and share inspiration with the team.

What would we love you to have?

  • Any sort of equine background or knowledge -- a horse racing background would get you a gold star!
  • A great sense of humor and drive to bring something unique and innovative to a traditional industry.
  • An interest in pitching in on editorial tasks -- like copy writing and editing, generating story ideas, and developing creative concepts with the rest of the team that integrate content with exceptional design possibilities.

Why you should apply?

Aside from pocketing reasonable pay, holding industry standard benefits, and enjoying a workstation which includes a shiny new iMac, you'll have the chance to integrate original content and stunning photography with your own fantastic creative ideas.

Now what?

There is an immediate opening. Please send a quality cover letter with your resume by email to dkaplan@standardbredcanada.ca. Please include a PDF portfolio (or link to online samples of your work) and indicate where you saw this ad.

We thank all those who apply, but only those applicants who are selected for an interview will be contacted.
