The Michigan Harness Horsemen's Association has reported that 26-year-old trainer/driver Robert 'RJ' Williams, III passed away yesterday.

Williams passed away in a single-vehicle accident near Leslie during the afternoon of Wednesday, June 1 on his way to pick up grain.

According to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Department, Williams' pick-up truck left the roadway at approximately 4:15 p.m. and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Floridian moved to Michigan roughly one year ago and had been working at his aunt's (Krista Williams) stable near Jackson.

Williams' easy-going style and positive attitude was a welcome addition to the backstretch and he will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

Williams' parents and grandparents are longtime horsepeople with strong Michigan roots.

Arrangements have not been announced.

Please join Standardbred Canada and the Michigan Harness Horsemen's Association in offering condolences to the family and friends of RJ Williams.
